I was lucky. My family barely escaped the Holocaust.
Nevertheless, I was old enough to see Brown shirts and black shirts and anti-Semitism and the gradual disintegration of a weak, if legitimate government in Germany.
A rabble-rouser and his ilk caused it, along with unemployment, anti-Semites and the under-educated.
That was in the early 1930s. Now, jump ahead eighty-some years and put a mustache and a cowlick on Rick Perry and you have all the trappings of Adolf Hitler.
It is time to be afraid, time to realize that the same low-lives who complained about the government and were opposed to anything liberal in pre-Nazi Germany are the rednecks and Tea Partyers, the Southerners, disaffected Texans and bigoted Mississippians and Alabamians and Georgians of today.
I look around our placid little village of West Hollywood and see little or no overt concern about the inmates about to take over the asylum. The gay bars are filled on weekends and for Sunday brunches.
Talk is about condo prices and the demise of Jon’s and driving while texting.
All too few of us are concerned that life as we have come to know it is in danger by these right-wing ideologues, backed by wealthy industrialists (just as the Krupps and Henry Ford supported Hitler).
The idea of foreclosure concerns me more about the right wing’s eagerness to suspend my civil liberties, reduce my Social Security and Medicare benefits, remove any vestige of government laws covering clean water and air and drive this non-white upstart from the White House.
Rick Perry is the demonic, unrepentant image of Hitler, and the Bachmanns and Palins and all those Lane Bryant homemakers wobbling with their anti-government slogans on cellulite thighs, followed by their pot-bellied “better halves, are the future Brown shirts and rabble rousers ready to rebuild concentration camps and, if necessary, gas ovens, to have their way and call it “Constitutional.”
I am deathly afraid too many people will listen to this Texas-twanged poisonous diatribe. I wish it were simply possible to laugh these people out of the public eye.
The fight here has to go beyond Prop 8 and same-sex marriage and freedom of religion and a belief that there is no scientific proof that someone created the world in sex days.
Thank whomever you pray to for our Henry Waxman, a beacon in a darkened tunnel of ignorant legislators.
It is time to get off our bar stools and out of the gym weight rooms and do something to keep these cretins out of our future.
