Arizona is following Texas’ lead by going after funding for Planned Parenthood.
Last week an Arizona Senate panel approved HB 2800, a bill that strips state funding from any group like Planned Parenthood that performs abortions. The vote in the Arizona Senate Committee on Healthcare and Medical Liability Reform was along party-lines and after support for similar legislation cleared the Arizona House earlier this month.
If the bill is passed by the full Senate, and there’s reason to believe it will be, Sen. Jan Brewer (R) has promised to sign the bill into law.
Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona is running for Arizona’s open U.S. Senate seat criticized the bill as “extremely misguided” and “detrimental to the health and safety of women.”
Arizona law already prohibits using tax dollars for abortion, so this move will only accomplish taking away necessary preventative health care services from poor women. Which, it seems, is precisely the point.
