2011-12-13 "US, Media, Seattle Anarchists Fail to Get Unions to Strike, Will Settle for Bicyclists"Convincing an entire region's union port workers to strike is tough--especially if you're actually not in the union. Perhaps that's why local anarchists are toning down their demands that union members strike to something more manageable: A bike ride! As reported three weeks ago, protestors at Occupy Oakland voted to call for a West-Coast-wide port shutdown on Dec. 12 (today), with the ongoing fight between Longview, Wash. union workers and the EGT grain company pointed to as the focal point of the call. ---- The call to arms, which was echoed by anarchist groups around the region, directly pointed at union workers, asking them in plain terms to accept the Occupy movement's demands and initiate a strike. ---- But in late November, union workers did what they told me they would do, which was reject the call, because, well, who the hell do these non-union people think they are in calling for a union strike.
So here's the anarchists new game plan for today:
This is a call for every bike enthusiast, bike owner and bike rider to meet at Westlake Plaza at 1 PM on December 12th. From there, a march to shutdown the Port of Seattle will start. It will be extremely useful to have as many bikes as possible leading the march and being able to scout ahead. Please, spread this invitation widely to all of your friends.
